DiscussionTo our knowledge this is the first comparative cost analysis for the treatment of non-genital warts, an extremely common reason tot seeking care for skin disease (19). We modeled our analysis in a fashion similar to one recently published for genital warts which found that surgical methods were the most cost-effective therapy (20). In this study we compared the relative costs of treating a patient with a moderate wart burden with one of seven commonly employed physician administered treatment regimens, including cryotherapy with liquid nitrogen, topical squaric acid. carbon dioxide and pulsed-dye laser therapy, intralesional bleomycin, intralesional interferon alpha, and immunotherapy with intralesional Candida antigen. We did not include surgical excision of common warts in this analysis since, in our opinion, this is not standard initial therapy for multiple warts. The cost to the patient is the same for the treatment of warts employing electrodessication and curettage as it is for cryotherapy because it is a destruction of benign lesions. Our simple analysis revealed that of these office based treatment regimens, the most cost-beneficial was carbon dioxide laser therapy and intralesional injections of Candida skin test antigen. Complicating the use of the carbon dioxide laser, however'' is the high rate of adverse effects, which may include scarring, pain. and a disturbance of function in limbs treated for warts (15).
